John Andersson, CMO at Ruukki, is a Novare alumnus from our executive program. Explore his insights from the discovery tour to Shenzhen, China – reflecting on speed, scale and the impact of first-hand experience. John also shares his perspectives on how leaders can navigate uncertainty through an approach grounded in optimism, candor and scenario planning.
You attended one of Novare’s leadership programs for executives a few years ago. Looking back, what key insights or perspectives did you take with you from the program?
One thing that stands out to me is that as much as technology advancements are moving fast, the fundamentals of what makes an idea translate to a business value remains the same: the clarity of customer problem, a compelling proposition, and the ability to mobilize people around it. However, the speed and iterative approach of planning less and learning through execution of only a partially formed vision is something that I continue to challenge myself with.

You travelled to Shenzhen, China with your cohort in 2019. What impressions stayed with you?
I carry with me the systemic speed and innovation-centric culture that has so rapidly been ingrained into the society and its people. Also, the notion of having enough data to take the next step instead of exhaustive data for planning and internal stakeholder purposes. And to be courageous, bold and accept that failures are part of the equation of ultimately winning the league even if you lose a few games along the way.
I meet a lot of highly skilled people that have a strong geopolitical point of view on US, China, Europe etc. – but many have in fact travelled very little. Unless you have been there, in this case Shenzhen, you cannot fully comprehend the speed and scale of operations. So, my everyday note to self: zoom away from the internet articles and go there, be it the city around the corner or on the other side of the planet but never underestimate firsthand experiences.

Leadership often means navigating uncertainty and change. How do you approach this in your leadership?
Focus on what is within your sphere of control. Approach any uncertainty with optimism and candor, don’t leave things untold, but focus on how you can curate the teams to understand why steps are taken and why it will be great for the company to act. Now.
I like to look at all decisions from a scenario perspective. I will not give too many answers, but have no problem whatsoever to take decisions between a well thought scenario A or B. Scenario planning makes you think of outliers and what-ifs and is a simple tool to move forward.
