Does strategy still have a place?

In a world that is more uncertain than ever, does strategy still have a place?

In a world that is difficult to understand and predict, it might be tempting to conclude that you should forget about strategy and focus only on the “here and now.” In my view, this is wrong — even if it merits a rethink of strategy, in terms of how it’s developed, as well as its structure and level of detail.

Deciding where to play and how to win

When it comes to how it’s developed, the importance of including your organization has never been greater. It ensures a broader understanding of today’s complex world through multiple perspectives, while also building awareness, understanding, and alignment. The power of this might be obvious, but what might be less so is how high levels of inclusion allow for agility, as it is easier to shift or pivot when you understand the world you operate within and have been part of deciding where you should play and how to play to win, sustainably.

It is easier to shift or pivot when you understand the world you operate within and have been part of deciding where you should play and how to play to win, sustainably.

As for the structure and level of detail of the strategy, this varies, but a clear trend is to decide at a higher level where to play, while being more clear (relative to the past) on purpose and how to behave, as in culture, leaving the details of the “what” closer to the markets and the customers.

It is with the above in mind that we go from looking up and out to understand our world to addressing strategy – exploring new ways of developing strategy together with line managers known to be exceptional at this, reflecting on research and trends on the topic, and seeking to learn from other angles, like entrepreneurs. But most importantly, we aim to learn together with you. Care to join?

Elevate your strategic leadership

To conclude, this is exactly what participants in the Novare Executive Program engage in – strengthening their strategic leadership through external perspectives, proven methods, and hands-on work with their own business challenges. The program consists of four modules, including one with a dedicated focus on strategy – Decide where to play and how to win – as well as the Novare Discovery Tour to Lausanne, Switzerland, where we explore leadership, business, and innovation in a dynamic and inspiring learning environment. The program starts in September 2025, and admissions are now open.
